Many at times, we get asked by our customers: “what is better – steel security grilles or aluminium grilles?”

Undeniably, aluminium and steel are very important in our daily lives nowadays. The endless list ranges from transportation or buildings and roads to furniture, clocks and cutlery which have at least one component that uses either steel or aluminium.

Why Steel?

• It has the property of being more malleable than Aluminium.
• Once it is galvanised and powder coated, steel is more resistant to rust.

• Galvanised and powder coated steel thus outlasts aluminium.

Why Aluminium?

• Aluminium is the third most abundant element in the world
• It has 1/3 of the density and stiffness of steel.
• Naturally more resistant to rust.
• Resistant to corrosion.
• Lighter than steel.
• Shipping costs are lower and transportation is easier.

Both, steel and aluminium, are widely used in the manufacturing of security products. The question though is how to make a choice between those two according to what is most appropriate for your security when choosing to buy door and window security grilles. It is mandatory to find the appropriate products for the safety and security of your property. Yet, above all, the quality of the product should not be overlooked. An efficient product is only efficient if it is made of the right material.

All in all, while aluminium has become popular due to its cheaper price, corrosion resistance, light-weight, steel is a by far more secure, stronger, heavier duty, durable and longer lasting material. Moreover, even if aluminium is more resistant to rust, this is solved by using zinc coated steel (usually known as Zintec Steel), powder coating or galvanised when used externally. Unlike steels, aluminium alloys have no well-defined fatigue limit, meaning that fatigue failure (in a weakened state caused by long stress) eventually occurs. Hence, the benefits of steel outweigh those of aluminium.
