bogus caller knocking at the door of an elderly lady

Most burglars break in, some don’t. Known as “bogus callers”, some intruders will try to trick or con their way into your property. Pretending to be a respectable worker from a Utility Company or your local council, a salesman from a well known organisation, a lady asking to go to get her lost cat in your rear garden or simply someone calling in to carry out some urgent repairs, Bogus Callers will make it looks and sounds believable.

PLEASE DON’T BE FOOLED!!!

Below are few simple steps to avoid being the next target:

  • Always think twice before opening your door to a stranger – use your spy viewer or chain, peep through your window to see if you recognise that person(s).
  • You have entirely the right to ask callers for proof of ID. Genuine tradesmen will always carry an identification card with their photograph on. Check this carefully. Even though someone has got proof of identity does not mean you get grant access. If you are unsure, do not hesitate to pick up the phone and speak to the company the caller claims to represent.
  • The Utilities now offer a password identification system. Any caller from one of these companies should be able to give a pre-arranged password as additional proof of identity.
  • Please do not let yourself get fooled or distracted by callers claming that they have seen something untoward in your rear garden or somewhere which may encourage you to leave your house – they are normally with an accomplice awaiting this distraction.
  • If you are still not convinced of the identity of the caller or you are not getting through to their company to confirm this visit, don’t let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend, relative or neighbour to be present on their return or ask the caller to contact this person.

Please always treat every stranger with great caution. If someone is being persistent to come in, please do not feel pressurised and if you are unsure, dial 999 immediately.
